Exchanging or cancelling train tickets or seat reservations: here's how.

You need to exchange or even cancel your train ticket or seat reservation? See below for information on how this works and when it is possible.

Exchange

  • You can exchange online tickets* on bahn.com, depending on the applicable conditions. If you are logged into your My Bahn account, you can do this by clicking on Show all bookings. If you booked anonymously as a guest, you can use the Order search feature. You will need the order number of your ticket and the number of the identification card used.

Cancellations and refunds

  • Depending on the refund conditions, you can cancel online tickets* online. Mobile phone tickets can also be cancelled via the DB Navigator app. To find out exactly how this works, please click on your ticket in the list below.

Seat reservations

  • Depending on the applicable conditions, seat reservations can be changed free of charge once, regardless of whether you made the reservation online or, for example, at a DB Travel Centre. To find out exactly how this works, please click on your type of seat reservation in the list below.

Online tickets and mobile phone tickets (flexible fares)

You can cancel your flexible fare ticket (with or without BahnCard discount) online, provided you booked the ticket on bahn.com. If you booked your ticket as a mobile phone ticket, you can cancel it online (Show all bookings) or via the DB Navigator app.

Fee for flexible fare tickets for long-distance trains (ICE, IC/EC, IC Bus):
Before the first day of validity of the outbound journey, cancellation of the ticket is free of charge
On or after the first day of validity of the outbound journey, cancellations are subject to a fee of EUR 19.

Fee for flexible fare tickets for regional and local trains (IRE, RE, RB, S-Bahn):
Before the first day of validity of the outbound journey, cancellation of the ticket is free of charge
On or after the first day of validity of the outbound journey cancellations are subject to a fee of EUR 17.50.

Online tickets and mobile phone tickets (saver fares)

You can cancel your saver fare ticket (with or without BahnCard discount) online for journeys within Germany, provided you booked the ticket on bahn.com. If you booked your ticket as a mobile phone ticket, you can cancel it online (Show all bookings) or via the DB Navigator app.

Please note: in the case of saver fares for return trips, the first day of validity refers to the outbound journey.

Saver fare tickets for journeys within Germany:

Up until the day before the first day of validity of the outbound journey exchanges and cancellations are subject to a fee of EUR 19.
On or after the first day of validity of the outbound journey exchanges and cancellations are not possible**.

Flexible fare tickets received by post

To cancel a flexible fare ticket you received by post (with or without BahnCard discount), we offer a form that is available online. Please fill in this form and send it with your tickets to the address specified on the form or drop it off at a DB Travel Centre.

If your ticket includes products that require reservations, for example a seat reservation (e.g. IC Bus), please include the corresponding receipts.

Refunds due to delayed or cancelled trains

Refunds for delays or train cancellations are possible in accordance with the terms and conditions of the respective offers.

To request such a refund, please download the passenger rights form here (in English), fill it out, sign it and send it to the address specified on the form.

Be sure to remember to include the original ticket or a copy of your season ticket or Mobility BahnCard 100 with the passenger rights form. We regret that we are otherwise unable to pay any compensation.

Regional day tickets, weekend ticket, day ticket for Germany

These tickets are excluded from exchanges and refunds.

Non-complimentary seat reservations (1st and 2nd class)

■ Seat reservations purchased in conjunction with a flexible fare can be changed once free of charge up until the first day of validity for a rebooked journey taking place no more than 31 days later (subject to availability). Seat reservations purchased in conjunction with a saver fare can only be changed on the day of validity of the reservation. Obligatory reservations are excluded from exchange. You can make your new reservation online, via the DB Navigator app or at a DB Travel Centre. Refunds are not available.*

■ Exchanges and refunds are not available after the first day of validity.*

* Exception: If you were not able to use your seat reservation for reasons attributable to Deutsche Bahn, the reservation fee will be refunded. Possible reasons attributable to Deutsche Bahn: Your coach was not available. Your reserved seat was not available or not usable. You were not able to use your reserved seat due to a delay and missed connection.

Purchased offline, changed online!
To change seat reservations made online or on a mobile phone, please log into My Bahn or use the Order search feature.
You can also change reservations you made at a DB Travel Centre or DB agency. To do so, please follow this link (in English only) and register for free.

* Exception: If you were not able to use your seat reservation for reasons attributable to Deutsche Bahn, the reservation fee will be refunded. Possible reasons attributable to Deutsche Bahn: Your coach was not available. Your reserved seat was not available or not usable. Integrated seat reservations (in conjunction with 1st-class tickets)

■ Seat reservations purchased in conjunction with a flexible fare can be changed once free of charge up until the first day of validity for a rebooked journey taking place no more than 31 days later (subject to availability). Seat reservations purchased in conjunction with a saver fare can only be changed on the day of validity of the reservation. This applies to the integrated seat reservation in first class and seat reservations (1st and 2nd class) purchased separately. You can make your new reservation online, via the DB Navigator app or at a DB Travel Centre. Refunds are not available.*

■ Exchanges and refunds are not available after the first day of validity.*

* Exception: If you were unable to use your seat reservations for reasons attributable to Deutsche Bahn, you will receive a refund (EUR 4.50). Possible reasons attributable to Deutsche Bahn: Your coach was not available. Your reserved seat was not available or not usable. You were not able to use your reserved seat due to a delay and missed connection.

Purchased offline, changed online!
To change seat reservations made online or on a mobile phone, please log into My Bahn or use the Order search feature.
You can also change reservations you made at a DB Travel Centre or DB agency. To do so, please follow this link (in English only) and register for free.

Multi-trip seat reservation (1st and 2nd class)

Exchanges
■ Up to and on the first day of validity, seat reservations from the voucher booklet can be changed free of charge once (for a journey taking place 1 to 31 days later).
■ Exchanges are not available after the first day of validity

Refunds
Refunds are also possible, but only for the voucher booklet as a whole. Simply submit all vouchers at a DB Reisezentrum (DB Travel Centre) or DB agency.
■ Free of charge before the first day of validity
■ On or after the first day of validity subject to a processing fee of EUR 17.50

Bicycle tickets

Bicycle tickets can be cancelled only in conjunction with the corresponding train tickets. This means that it must be possible to cancel the train ticket (e.g. flexible fare).

Exception: The "Niedersachsentarif" day bicycle ticket can be cancelled together with the regional day ticket for Lower-Saxony.

Fees:
Before the first day of validity exchanges, refunds and cancellations are free of charge.
Exchanges and refunds via Order search or My Bahn. Bicycle tickets can be cancelled only in conjunction with the corresponding train tickets.
■ Exchanges and refunds are not available after the first day of validity.

DB Gepäckservice ticket (luggage service)

Free of charge cancellation up until 6 pm on the business day (Mo.-Sa.) before pick-up (on the day of the outbound journey).

Depending on the booking method, please cancel

■ online via My Bahn
■ at your DB Travel Centre or DB agency
■ by calling Customer Service at +49 (0) 180 6 23 67 23 (charges depending on provider)

City mobil tickets / onward journey for Niedersachsentarif

Bicycle tickets can be cancelled/refunded only in conjunction with the corresponding train tickets.

Fees:
Before the first day of validity cancellations and refunds are free of charge.

Special and promotional tickets

The terms and conditions of the individual offers apply. Most of the promotional offers are excluded from exchanges and refunds.

* Does not apply if part of a package offer.
** If you modify your travel plans, it is possible to change the train booked for saver fares on the day of travel. Selecting another train costs a small fee, and you must also pay the difference between the price of your saver fare and the flexible fare. You can buy the saver fare supplement from sales outlet staff.

Exchanges and refunds of tickets not booked online or from a mobile phone

You purchased your ticket from a ticket machine, by calling the travel service, at a DB Travel Centre or DB agency? Please present your ticket at a DB Travel Centre. If your booking includes products that require reservations (e.g. IC Bus Nuremberg – Prague), you will need to present both the ticket itself and the seat reservation.

Use of different train due to delay

If the train specified on your ticket is not on time (e.g. due to delays), you can catch the next suitable train and continue your journey without paying a supplement. Please check our GTC for details regarding returning, changing and refunding tickets.
