Exchanging or cancelling tickets or reservations

Would you like to change your ticket or seat reservation, or maybe cancel your journey? See below for information on how this works and when it is possible.

With a "My Bahn" customer account
Without a "My Bahn" customer account
If you are a registered customer, use the booking review in your "My Bahn" customer account.
If you booked a ticket without logging in, use the Order search function. This requires the order number of your ticket.

Flexible fare tickets booked via bahn.com or the DB Navigator app

You can exchange or cancel your flexible fare ticket (with/without BahnCard discount) online if you booked and downloaded this online (to the app on your smartphone or to your computer as a PDF for storage or printing out).

If you booked your ticket as a mobile phone ticket, you can also exchange or cancel it in the DB Navigator app's booking review.

Charges:

  • Before the 1st day of validity for outbound journeys Free exchange or cancellation
  • On and after the first day of validity:
    ● Exchange or cancellation of flexible fare tickets for long-distance travel (ICE, IC/EC, IC Bus): EUR 19 fee
    ● Exchange or cancellation of flexible fare tickets for local transport (DB Regio, transport associations, NE/SEE): EUR 17.50 fee

A long-distance fee is charged for journeys that combine long-distance and local transport on one ticket (single or round trip). This fee comes to EUR 19, and it is incurred for connections that use at least one long-distance train.

Saver fares booked via bahn.com or the DB Navigator app

You can exchange or cancel your saver fare ticket (with/without BahnCard discount) online if you booked and downloaded this online (to the app on your smartphone or to your computer as a PDF for storage or printing out).

If you booked your ticket as a mobile phone ticket, you can cancel it online (Show all bookings), in the mobile portal m.bahn.com or via the DB Navigator app.

In the case of saver fare tickets for return trips, the first day of validity refers to the outbound journey.

Charges:

    Please note: If you have reserved a seat, this reservation is linked to your ticket. In other words, when you cancel your ticket, this also cancels your seat reservation.
    Make sure that your ticket and seat reservation have the same travel class (first or second class).

    Flexible fare tickets received by post

    To cancel a flexible fare ticket you received by post (with or without BahnCard discount), we offer a form that is available online. Please fill in this form and send it with your tickets to the address specified on the form or drop it off at a DB Travel Centre.

    If your ticket includes products that require reservations, for example a seat reservation (e.g. IC Bus), please include the corresponding receipts.

    Fee for flexible fare tickets for long-distance trains (ICE, IC/EC, IC Bus):
    Before the first day of validity of the outbound journey, cancellation of the ticket is free of charge
    On or after the first day of validity of the outbound journey, cancellations are subject to a fee of EUR 19.

    Fee for flexible fare tickets for regional and local trains (IRE, RE, RB, S-Bahn):
    Before the first day of validity of the outbound journey, cancellation of the ticket is free of charge
    On or after the first day of validity of the outbound journey cancellations are subject to a fee of EUR 17.50.

    • Saver fare tickets (incl. BahnCard 50 saver fares):
      Until 1 day before the first day before the first day of validity for the outbound trip the refund fee for saver fare tickets for long-distance travel (ICE, IC/EC) is EUR 19.
      ● It is not possible to exchange or refund tickets on and after the first day of validity for the outbound trip.

      On and after the first day of validity: exchanges and refunds are excluded

      Until 1 day before the first day of validity: exchanges and cancellations incur a fee of EUR 19
      On and after the first day of validity: exchanges and refunds are excluded

    Refunds due to delayed or cancelled trains

    Refunds for delays or train cancellations are possible in accordance with the terms and conditions of the respective offers.

    To request such a refund, please download the passenger rights form, complete, sign and send it to the address specified on the form.

    Be sure to remember to include the original ticket or a copy of your season ticket or Mobility BahnCard 100 with the passenger rights form. We regret that we are otherwise unable to pay any compensation.

    These tickets are excluded from exchanges and refunds.

    Non-complimentary seat reservations (1st and 2nd class)

    Bought online, exchanged online
    You can make your new reservation online, via the DB Navigator app or at a DB Travel Centre. To change seat reservations made online or on a mobile phone, please log into My Bahn customer account or use the Order search feature.

    You can also change reservations you made at a DB Travel Centre or DB agency. To do so, please click exchanging seat reservations and register for free.

    • Seat reservations can be changed—depending on availability—free of charge up to and on the first day of the reservation's validity.

      Please note: your seat reservation is linked to your ticket. In other words, when you cancel your ticket, this also cancels your seat reservation. This does not apply to exchanged seat reservations. Make sure that your ticket and exchanged seat reservation have the same travel class (first or second class).

      Refunds are not available.*
    • Exchanges and refunds are not possible after the first day of validity.*

    * Exception: If you were not able to use your seat reservation for reasons attributable to Deutsche Bahn, the reservation fee will be refunded. Possible reasons attributable to Deutsche Bahn: Your coach was not available. Your reserved seat was not available or not usable. You were not able to use your reserved seat due to a delay and missed connection.


    Integrated seat reservations in conjunction with first class tickets

    Purchased offline, changed online!
    To change seat reservations made online or on a mobile phone, please log into My Bahn or use the Order search feature.
    You can also change reservations you made at a DB Travel Centre or DB agency. To do so, please click this exchanging seat reservations and register for free.

    • Seat reservations can be changed—depending on availability—free of charge up to and on the first day of the reservation's validity.

      You can make your new reservation online, via the DB Navigator app or at a DB Travel Centre. Refunds are not available.*

      Please note: your seat reservation is linked to your ticket. In other words, when you cancel your ticket, this also cancels your seat reservation.
      This does not apply to exchanged seat reservations. Make sure that your ticket and exchanged seat reservation have the same travel class (first or second class).
    • Exchanges and refunds are not possible after the first day of validity.*

    * Exception: If you were unable to use your seat reservations for reasons attributable to Deutsche Bahn, you will receive a refund (EUR 4.50). Possible reasons attributable to Deutsche Bahn: Your coach was not available. Your reserved seat was not available or not usable. You were not able to use your reserved seat due to a delay and missed connection.

    Multi-trip seat reservation (first and second class)

    • Exchanges
      Up to and on the first day of validity, seat reservations from the voucher booklet can be changed free of charge once (for a journey taking place 1 to 31 days later).
      ● Exchanges are not possible after the first day of validity.*
    • Refund
      Refunds are available only for the entire booklet. Simply submit all vouchers at a DB Travel Centre or DB agency.
      Before the first day of validity: free of charge
      ● On and after the first day of validity: incurs a processing fee of EUR 19

    Bicycle tickets

    Bicycle tickets can be cancelled only in conjunction with the corresponding train tickets. This means that it must be possible to cancel the train ticket (e.g. flexible fare).

    Exception: The ""Niedersachsentarif"" day bicycle ticket can be cancelled together with the regional day ticket for Lower-Saxony.

    Charges:

    • Before the 1st Exchanges/refunds and cancellations are free of charge before the first day of validity.
      You can exchange or refund a ticket via the Order search function in your My Bahn. Bicycle tickets can be cancelled only in conjunction with the corresponding train tickets.
    • On and after the first day of validity.

    DB Gepäckservice ticket (luggage service)

    Free of charge cancellation up until 6 pm on the business day (Mo.-Sa.) before pick-up (on the day of the outbound journey).

    Depending on how you booked your ticket, please use one of the following cancellation options:

    • Online via your My Bahn
    • Via your DB Travel Centre or DB agency
    • Via DB's customer service number at 0180 6 23 67 23 (costs depend on provider)

    City mobil tickets / onward journey for Niedersachsentarif

    Tickets can be cancelled/refunded only in conjunction with the corresponding train tickets.

    Charges:

    • Cancellations and refunds are free before the first day of validity.
    • Exchanges and refunds are not possible on and after the first day of validity.

    Special and promotional tickets

    The general terms and conditions of the individual offers apply. Most of the promotional offers are excluded from exchanges and refunds.

    * Does not apply if part of a package offer.

    Exchanges and refunds of tickets not booked online or from a mobile phone

    You purchased your ticket from a ticket machine, by calling the travel service, at a DB Travel Centre or DB agency? Please present your ticket at a DB Travel Centre. If your booking includes products that require reservations (e.g. IC Bus Nuremberg – Prague), you will need to present both the ticket itself and the seat reservation.

    Use of different train due to delay

    If the train specified on your ticket is not on time (e.g. due to delays), you can catch the next suitable train and continue your journey without paying a supplement. If you have a local transport ticket but want to catch a more expensive train (e.g. ICE), you have to buy the necessary ticket in addition and then reclaim costs either at a DB Travel Centre or using the online form. This option is not available for tickets with substantial discounts (e.g. a weekend ticket for Germany, a day ticket for Germany, a regional day ticket).
