Do I have to travel on the train and at the time indicated on the ticket?

No. You can change your original plans by taking a different train at a different time during your ticket's validity period. There is just one condition: the route has to remain the same. The following question contains further information about the validity period.

How long is my ticket valid when I book a journey? Can I interrupt my journey?

  • Tickets for round trips under 100 km:
    For the outward and return journeys, the date specified on the ticket applies.
  • Tickets for round trips over 100 km:
    Travellers must start the outbound or return journey on the relevant day specified on the ticket.
    You can interrupt a trip if you like and continue at a later time, such as the next day, provided the start and destination stations remain unchanged.

    The period of validity of your ticket remains unchanged.

Can I exchange or cancel a flexible ticket?

Yes. You can exchange or cancel your ticket free of charge before its first day of validity.
On and after the first day of validity (date of outbound journey), we charge the following fees for exchanges/cancellations:

  • Flexible tickets for long-distance transport (ICE, IC/EC, IC Bus) - EUR 19 per ticket
  • Flexible tickets for local transport (RE, RE, RB, S-Bahn) - EUR 17.50 per ticket

Do I get a discount if I have a BahnCard?

BahnCard 25 and 50 holders get a discount of 25% or 50% when travelling within Germany.

Can children accompany me for free?

  • Children aged 0-5 always travel free of charge and do not need to be included when booking a ticket.
  • Children aged 6-14-Jährige travel for free when accompanying parents/grandparents. They must be included when booking a ticket.

Can I buy a flexible ticket for my child if they are travelling alone?

  • Children aged 0-5 always travel for free.
  • Children aged 6-14 pay half the adult fare.
  • Children aged 15 and over pay full price.

How long is the advance booking period for tickets?

Flexible tickets can be bought from max. 6 months in advance until shortly before travel.

Do flexible tickets automatically include a seat reservation?

  • Second class: tickets do not include a seat reservation. You can purchase a seat reservation with your ticket or separately at a later point of time.
  • First class: all tickets automatically include a seat reservation.
