FAQs

Can I book a group ticket online?

Yes. You can use bahn.com to book a ticket online for group travel (max. 30 people). Tickets can be booked from 6 months in advance until shortly before travel.

Our website also displays the prices and availability of tickets for groups of over 30 people. Simply select the option that interests you most. If it is not possible to book a ticket online, you are automatically offered a form you can use to submit a non-binding request for a ticket. A customer agent will contact you within 24 hours.

You can also contact a DB Travel Centre, DB agency or our hotline.

Tickets for group travel are also available from the following:

- DB ticket machine (max. 30 people)
- DB Travel Centre or DB agency (up to 12 months in advance)
- Phone service (up to 12 months in advance) at +49 (0)180 6 99 66 33 (costs depend on provider)

The offer is available only if a train contains enough seats that can be booked free of charge.

Can I book all ticket types online?

No. You can use our website to see prices and availability, but it is not possible to book the following kinds of tickets online:

- For groups larger than 30 people
- For journeys more than 6 months in the future
- For journeys that use local transport services only
- For certain routes outside of Germany

If it is not possible to book a ticket online, you are automatically offered a form you can use to submit a non-binding request for a ticket. A customer agent will contact you within 24 hours.

How do I display a ticket I bought online?

You can print your online ticket out or display it in the DB Navigator app. This option is not available for all international tickets.

What trains are covered by group tickets?

When using ICE/IC/EC trains and IC Bus services, you are restricted to the services indicated on the group ticket (number of service is included).
When using IRE/RE/RB/S-Bahn services, you can take any train you want (i.e. travel is not train-specific).

Does a group ticket cost the same regardless where it is booked?

Yes. Prices and availability are the same on bahn.com, from DB ticket machines, at DB Travel Centres, at DB agencies and via our service hotline.

Am I still restricted to travelling on a specific train if my train is delayed or cancelled?

No. If DB is responsible for a situation whereby you miss your connecting train or are delayed by more than 20 minutes, you are no longer restricted to travelling on a specific train.

Will my group be seated together on the train?

Whenever possible, our system reserves seats so that a group sits together. If you use bahn.com or a DB ticket machine, our system allocates seats automatically. Their location is printed on the ticket.

Does everyone in the group have their own ticket?

No. One collective ticket is issued for the entire group.

If a group contains 31 or more people, everyone gets their own personal pass for travelling.
In the case of international groups, personal passes are issued for groups of 6 people and more. This does not apply to tickets booked online. Travellers must always be able to present their tickets when travelling.

Can I book a ticket even if I am not travelling?

Yes. However, group tickets booked on bahn.com are person-specific. This means that, during the booking process, one person must be selected and their name and address must be included on the ticket. On board the train, the attendant then compares the details on the ticket against the details on this person's ID document.

Tickets booked in a DB Travel Centre, DB agency or by phone are not person-specific.

Is it possible to give the person-specific ticket to someone else?

Yes. If the person named on the group ticket is not travelling, it is possible to add someone else's name to the ticket.

Only the person who books and pays for the ticket can change the details on it. It is possible to change the name on the ticket until shortly before travel.

How to change the details on the ticket:

  • Call our phone service at +49 (0)180 6 10 11 11 (prices vary by provider). This hotline is staffed around the clock.
  • Tell the customer agent that you have a group ticket and that it was booked online. It might be helpful to tell the customer agent the German name of the ticket - "Sparpreis Gruppe".
  • Say the order number. This is printed on the online ticket, and it is also included in the e-mail you received as booking confirmation.
  • Then state the name (first name and surname) and address of the person who you are transferring the ticket to.
  • The customer agent changes the relevant details and issues a new ticket by e-mail. You can also use the ticket overview in our website's My Bahn section to call up a ticket.
  • Please make sure you only use the new online ticket with the new name when travelling. Our system automatically cancels the original ticket, making it invalid.

When travelling with children, what does a group ticket cost, and what do I need to consider?

Children aged 5 and under always travel for free. They do not need their own ticket or seat reservation. You have the option of reserving a seat for a fee when making your booking.

Children aged 6-14 pay half the adult fare. The ticket includes a free seat reservation.

Is it possible to add seats for young children (0-5) when booking group travel?

Children aged 0-5 travel for free. They do not have their own tickets and therefore do not have their own seats. You can book seats for young children (prices: EUR 4 in second class, EUR 5.30 in first class).

What does reserving a price mean?

This is a free and non-binding option to reserve a ticket for 21 days. It is possible to reserve a price up to 2 months before travel. You can make changes to your journey during the reservation period, which automatically expires after 21 days.

This option is available from the following:

- DB Travel Centre or DB agency
- Phone service at +49 (0)180 6 99 66 33 (costs depend on provider)

It is not possible to reserve a price when buying tickets online or from DB ticket machines.
