Traditional Christmas market in Nuremberg

A visit to Nuremberg in the German state of Bavaria should be on everyone's to-do list. Towering over the city is Nuremberg Castle. Together with Nuremberg's city walls, this castle is one of the most impressive medieval fortifications in Europe. The city's main square is dominated by the Our Lady Church and is the site of the famous Christmas Market. If you visit Nuremberg during the festive season, you won't want to miss it! This square also includes a replica of the Beautiful Fountain in Gothic style. The original can be seen in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, which is Germany's largest museum of cultural history.

Nuremberg is also a stark reminder of Germany's Nazi past. The Nazi party rally grounds, in the southeast of the city, were the location of six Nazi party rallies that were held between 1933 and 1938. The site is now used as a memorial and includes important examples of NS architecture. The Nuremberg Trials were held in the Palace of Justice from 1945 to 1949 for surviving German war criminals. The actual courtroom is still in use but can be visited when court is not in session. There is an accompanying exhibition with more background about the trials, including historical audio and video tapes and parts of the original dock. The main station of Nuremberg is connected to Germany's long-distance high-speed railway network, so getting here is easy!
